BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- More than 300 Cub Scouts will be racing their handcrafted derby cars at the Mall of America today for the annual Pinewood Derby.

The cars will be raced on 60 feet of racetrack in the Rotunda Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winners will go on to compete in the 60-year tradition for top honors in the Championship race. Participants in today's races range in age from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Derby cars are made from a pinewood block, four wheels, and nails. Racers are able to put their own creative spin on the car as long as they comply with the car standards; not exceeding a length of seven inches and cannot weigh more than five ounces.
