ARDMORE, Pa. - The lead belongs to Lefty.
Phil Mickelson carded three birdies on the back nine to take a one-shot lead over Hunter Mahan, Charl Schwartzel and Steve Stricker through three rounds of the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club.
Mickelson went ahead with a birdie on 17 and stayed on top with a hard-fought bogey on 18, a hole that none of the 73 players in the field birdied on Saturday.
The bogey capped an even-par 70 that leaves Mickelson at 1-under. He is seeking his first U.S. Open title following a record five runner-up finishes.
Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Billy Horschel are within two shots of the lead.
Tiger Woods has played himself out of contention. He's 10 shots back following a 76, matching his worst U.S. Open round as a pro.
