MINNEAPOLIS - A 7-year-old boy has been hospitalized after a near drowning in Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis on Friday afternoon.

Authorities said that the child's grandmother told lifeguards that the boy was missing at about 2 p.m. The lifeguards cleared the lake and began a search.

The boy was found in a swimming area, in about 4 to 6 feet of water.

Lifeguards began CPR on the child who was unconscious. He was transported to North Memorial Hospital where he is being treated, authorities said.

The city says that three lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident and that two were actively watching the beach.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. There's no word on the condition of the boy.
