ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A man who was brutally beaten on the east side of St. Paul in early August continues to show signs of improvement.
According to the website CaringBridge.com, Ray Widstrand was breathing on his own for a few hours on Saturday.
The site said that doctors are going to try and take him off the ventilator more on Sunday.
On Wednesday, he opened and closed one of his eyes.
Widstrand suffered swelling to the brain, among other injuries, after police say he was randomly attacked.
Police say they were called to Payne and Minnehaha Avenues on a report of a fight on Aug. 4.
When they arrived, officers observed 40 to 50 teens and young adults running from the area. They found Widstrand on the ground with blood coming from his nose and mouth.
Emergency personnel took the 26-year-old victim to Regions Hospital.
One man and four juveniles were arrested in the case.
