ST. PAUL, Minn. - Homes in St. Paul are going from abandoned to move-in ready thanks to continued work by the city's Department of Planning and Economic Development.
The department is overseeing federal funds through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, a response to the spike in home foreclosures.
"It's really nice to be able to put these properties back on line," said Sarah Zorn, a St. Paul housing project manager.
The city of St. Paul has received $30 million over a five-year span to purchase foreclosed homes, rehab them and finally sell them. Work has been underway in recent years on 200 homes in the city and now it's time to find new owners.
"The ownership opportunities are going really well," says Zorn. "They're typically selling in 30 to 60 days."
Currently, seven homes are on the market, with several more set to hit the market soon. The program has already seen 90 new owners.
"We are coming to the end of the work done through these federal dollars," said Zorn. "Now, it's time to evaluate and use the income from the project to keep doing some of these activities."
