LAKEVILLE, Minn. - A 16-year-old student is dead after a crash while on her way to Lakeville North High School.

Lakeville police say the female student, identified by the Lakeville Schools as Alyssa Ettl,was on Dodd Boulevard/County Road 9 just south of 109th Street around 9:45 a.m. when she apparently lost control of her Pontiac Grand Prix on the slush-covered roadway and was struck broadside by an oncoming SUV.

The teen was fatally injured while the driver of the SUV Crystal Hanson, 31, and her 2-year-old son suffered minor injuries. All were wearing seatbelts.

Lakeville North was previously scheduled to opentwo hours late, a late start that was not triggered by the weather. School officials have activated a crisis plan to assist students dealing with the sudden loss of their classmate.

The Lakeville Public School District website describes Alyssa Ettle, a junior, as an exceptional student, athlete, and a friend to many. Students have been invited to drop in at All Saints Catholic Church between 3 and 9 p.m. Pizza will be served at 6 p.m. with prayer following at 8 p.m.

Other churches including Hosanna Catalyst, Crossroads, Trinity, and Evergreen will also remember Alyssa during previously scheduled or special services Wednesday evening.

Authorities say snow was falling with a light mist at the time of the fatal crash.
