ELK RIVER, Minn. - Fire crews from a number of departments are battling a significant structure fire and single-digit temps in Elk River Thursday morning.

Elk River Fire Chief John Cunningham says rigs and firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex on the 360 block of Evans Avenue in Elk River around 6:30 a.m. An online check traces the address to the Evans Meadows Apartments.

Whencrews arrived they found flames leaping from the roof of a 16-unit building. Firefighters attacked the fire aggressively from insidebut were forced to evacuate when gusting winds pushed the firethrough the entire building.

Eventually, the chief says, there was a significant structural collapse on the third floor of the building.

Cunningham says all impacted residents were evacuated safely.

A number of crews from nearby communities are on the scene in a mutual aid capacity due to the size of the fire. Crews are being rotated every 15 minutes so they can avoid frostbite and other weather-related ailments. The frigid temps are also extremely hard on equipment.

The fire displaced approximately 20 adults according to the Red Cross.
