GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Congratulations. You've graduated. Now, how are you going to get a job? What you face immediately is that hiring managers are more interested in what you can do for them than what you did in school.

Ted Chalupsky of The Right Staff joined KARE 11 News @4 with the following tips to your workplace success:

1. Get expert help in writing your resume

Students often spend hours writing their resumes, expecting readers to analyze every detail. But, the average recruiters spend less than 30 seconds before they make the initial fit/no fit decision. In many cases, recruiters don't even take the first pass at a resume, leaving it up to resume-scanning computer programs to pass your name along or not. Several studies show that by involving an expert or coach significantly decreases the amount of time in finding a new job.

2. Develop a strong LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn has become one of the most popular online sites for hiring managers and recruiters to connect with job candidates to fill open positions. Think of the LinkedIn profile as your online resume', only with several enhancements that a hard copy or electronic resume' can't offer.

One of the biggest mistakes users of LinkedIn make is not including their picture on their profile. The picture should be professional and illustrate how you would look in a face-to-face interview.

The Summary section is the next area where you can expand on who you are your experience and areas of specialization. A good Summary will consist of a small paragraph of two to three sentences filled with keywords about your skills and experience, and a second paragraph about your areas of specialization.

The Experience section is where you can get really detailed about your background and will resemble the structure of a formal resume'. The strategic use of keywords relating to your skills and experience will enhance the chances of the recruiter identifying your profile while using a search engine.

Right now, LinkedIn is probably one of the best tools to help you get in front of a potential employer, since most top employers and recruiters are using LinkedIn as one of their main recruiting tools.

3. Align yourself with a strong recruiter

Many people have been successful by engaging a professional recruiter to achieve the goal of finding the right job.

Any successful recruiter should have a minimum of 5 to 10 years in recruiting and representing candidates for employment. Look for a recruiter that specializes in your skill area, and has done so successfully for 5 to 10 years.

Never pay a fee to be represented by a good recruiter. All fees are paid by the employer company.
