ST. PAUL, Minn. – The capital city will be a busy place this weekend with tens of thousands expected to attend the return of Red Bull Crashed Ice and big crowds for the girls' state high school hockey tournament.
It means the roads have to be ready.
"First, we are making sure all of our roads are passable," says city engineer John Maczko. "Then we'll focus on the arterials especially around the big events."
The word "passable" does not mean you'll see the pavement. City plows have been unable to cut through the compacted snow and ice. Crews hope treatment and sunlight help break up the beaten down snow.
"It will be a very busy weekend for us," says Maczko. "We will be focusing on the roads that carry a lot of people."
Meanwhile, Minneapolis crews have a big job ahead of them too, especially in the alleys.
