BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - An 18-year-old Brooklyn Park woman is in custody after grabbing the cell phone of former Hennepin County Commission and Minneapolis Mayoral candidate, Mark Andrew.
Letaija Cutler-Cain faces two counts of aggravated robbery in the first-degree and one count of assault in the second-degree for an attack at a Starbucks at the Mall of America.
According to the criminal complaint, Andrew was at the Starbucks on Thursday night, when a young man stole his iPhone. When Andrew chased after the thief, two women confronted him.
Cutler-Cain jumped on his back while her companion struck his head with a metal baton, the complaints said. Officers arrived at the scene and secured the women. The officers then interviewed Andrew and witnesses.
"People ought to be able to sit and have a cup of coffee without fear of assault," said Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman. "These two will be charged and prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law."
Andrew received treatment at a nearby hospital for head and facial injuries.
Cutler-Cain will make her first court appearance next week. The deadline to file charges against the other woman, a juvenile, has been extended to Monday at noon, officials said.
The third offender has not yet been identified, but a phone later recovered at the mall was determined to belong to Andrew.
