MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, Minn. - An 18-year-old Le Sueur County man has been charged in the fatal shooting of his father.
Jonas David Nelson was charged Wednesday with second degree murder after he called authorities Monday and said he had found his dad lying in the living room and that he appeared to be dead.
Police arrived to the rural Montgomery residence and found 47-year-old Richard Joseph Nelson dead of a gunshot wound to the head. According to the criminal complaint, the body was on the floor covered with blankets, his head resting on a pillow, and a large amount of blood on the floor.
Jonas told authorities he had been watching movies upstairs in his room when he heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot and glass breaking. He said when he went downstairs, he found his dad on the living room floor. He then called 911.
Police say they found a gun cabinet containing multiple firearms and ammunition.
Investigators questioned Jonas, who later admitted that he came downstairs to get some water and saw his dad sleeping on the floor. He told police he didn't know why, but he went into the gun cabinet, took out a rifle, and then shot his dad.
He said he had never been driven to rage in his life, but the way his dad had been treating him caused him to snap.
Investigators arrested Jonas without incident and he was taken to the Le Sueur County Jail.
Agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) are helping with the investigation.
