ROBBINSDALE, Minn. -- The Robbinsdale police chief was arrested in a prostitution sting, according to authorities.

The Coon Rapids Police Department says they conducted a sting at a private residence on Feb. 20.

Police said that 10 people were arrested and issued citations including Robbinsdale Police Chief Steve Smith.

"It was shock and sadness," said Mayor Regan Murphy. "We had a good relationship, but now I hope he can get through this."

According to authorities, no information was given at the time of the arrest that Smith was a member of law enforcement.

According to Robbinsdale City Council member Bill Blonigan, Smith has resident. The council was notified of his resignation on Saturday.

"He's been a good chief and has served the city well, but this is disappointing," Blonigan told KARE 11.

The city of Robbinsdale was also informed of the arrest on Saturday. Smith's resignation was accepted by City Manager Marcia Glick.

"We will move forward," said Murphy. "We have a great interim chief and wonderful officers on this staff."

Capt. Jim Franzen has been appointed Acting Chief.

Smith is scheduled to be in court on Monday.
