MOORHEAD, Minn. - Police are accusing a Minnesota man of trying to kill his girlfriend by choking her, punching her and beating her with a metal bat in their apartment.

Authorities say 34-year-old Michael Karau has been charged with attempted murder and three counts of assault.

Court documents don't show an attorney for Karau. He is due in court April 25.

Records show Karau's girlfriend has several broken bones and has clumps of hair missing from her head.

Authorities say the Moorhead man also tried to drown her in the bathtub.

The woman told police she has been dating Karau for almost a year. Police say she told investigators Karau had assaulted her at least twice before. She said Karau was highly intoxicated during the incident that lasted several hours.
