MINNEAPOLIS - A rash of burglaries in south Minneapolis has police on high alert.

Police said there has been more than 700 burglaries in the area so far this year, which is a significant increase over last year.

Burglars are mainly targeting garages as suspects look for high-end bikes, police said.

"What we're hoping is that people will harden their targets, make them far more difficult to break into. And hopefully that will help us reduce crime," said Public Information Officer John Elder.

Police said there are some things residents can do to lessen the odds of a burglary.

It starts with the obvious -- keep the garage door closed.

Police also said to consider deadbolts on service doors or place a 2-by-4 on the inside.

If a resident has windows, cover them up so burglars can't see what's inside to steal, police said.
