DULUTH, Minn. - A star football player for the University of Minnesota - Duluth (UMD) is recovering after being stabbed during a street fight early Saturday.

Senior running back Austin Sikorski is reported in stable condition after the altercation, which occurred around 2:00 a.m. Saturday on West Superior Street near Lake Avenue. Police say the 22-year-old Sikorski was stabbed in the lower right side of his abdomen.

Investigators are looking into what triggered the fight but do believe alcohol was involved,

"We are aware of incident involving a UMD student and are in the process of gathering details, our primary concern at this time is for his well-being," UMD said in a statement. "The matter is being handled by the Duluth Police Department."

The DPD has identified a "person of interest" in the case, but no arrests had been made as of Monday.

Sikorski was UMD's leading rusher last season, totaling 1,260 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also named a preseason All-American this summer by USA College Football.
