CHICAGO - A 23-year-old missing woman who is presumed dead after falling in to the Chicago River early Monday morning has been identified as a University of Minnesota student.
Lauren Li was a junior and honor student at the U of M College of Biological Sciences according to Danita Brown Young, Dean of Students at the university.
Li and a man fell into the Chicago River while trying to help their friend Ken Hoang, who had also fallen into the river trying to retrieve his cell phone. Hoang and a 21-year-old man were pulled from the river but Li has still not been found.
"The University of Minnesota extends our sympathy to the family of Ken Hoang, a former U student who died yesterday. We are also keeping the family of Lauren Li, a current U of M student who is currently missing, in our thoughts," Young said in a statement.
A dive unit called off its search at noon on Tuesday due to snowy conditions in Chicago. They have been hampered by frigid water temperatures and limited visibility.
Lauren Li was a graduate of Burnsville High School.
