KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A waitress at a Knoxville restaurant says she is still in shock after a customer tipped her $1,075 this week.
When Khadijah Muhammad left for work at Cheddar's on Wednesday, she did so with a notice on her doorknob from the local power company saying they would shut off her electricity if a past-due bill wasn't paid by the next day.
Muhammad's mother in Ohio suffered a heart attack earlier this month. Muhammad drove up to be with her.
"With God's help," she said, "I managed to make it up there driving in the middle of the big snow storm that hit earlier this month. I was able to see her and she pulled through, thankfully."
When she returned to Knoxville, Muhammad realized that she was not going to be able to pay all of her bills because of the work she had missed.
"I've been trying to pick up any extra shifts that I can," she said.
Her shift Wednesday began relatively slow. She served a few tables, including one table consisting of a husband, wife, and their small child.
"They really did not stand out," Muhammad said. "They were just nice folks. I remember talking to them and having a friendly conversation like you would with a neighbor."
The table's total bill with tax was $29.30. When Muhammad came to collect the check, the receipt was turned upside down. When she turned it over, she saw that the tip was for $1,075
"I just was in shock," she said.
It included a note that said, "Jesus Blessed us and we were led to give it to you. God Bless!"
Muhammad said she has no clue who the generous tippers were or where they were from. But she is certain of what she would like to tell them.
"I just want to thank them. Thank them so much, because I'm humbled. I'm grateful. I do believe that God led you to me at this time in my life," Muhammad said.
Muhammad said she is curious about how the customers arrived at the amount to tip. She wondered if that figure was simply what the customers had available to them or if it holds some other significance.
In any case, the money will help Muhammad make ends meet during a difficult time in her life.
"I hope and pray that someday I'm able to do this for somebody," she said.
