WASECA, Minn. -- Bad news rolled into Waseca Friday and arrived at Barry Erickson's front steps.

"When you see three dressed up Marines coming to your door it's usually not a very good sign," Erickson said.

Barry's son, Lance Cpl. Caleb Erickson, died after his vehicle was attacked by a suicide bomber. He suffered injuries to his chest and head. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Barry said Caleb died doing what he'd been dreaming of since he was 16 years old.

"His heart was just set on it," he said.

Caleb signed up as soon he graduated from Waseca High School in 2012.

The football player turned Marine deployed to Afghanistan last fall and was scheduled to come home in two months. Karla Erickson, Caleb's mom, hoped for a different kind of homecoming.

"I was trying my hardest to plan so I could surprise him when he came home," Karla said.

Caleb was just 20 years old. His older sister Rue said he wanted to attend college after the Marines but his first mission was always protecting his country.
