VILLAGE OF NELSON, Wis. - A 9-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being struck by a semi-truck while crossing the highway in southwestern Wisconsin Tuesday.
The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. near the intersection of State Highway 25/35 and Jefferson Street in the Village of Nelson. When deputies arrived they found the boy suffering from life-threatening injuries, and learned that the truck that struck him had left the scene.
Investigators say the victim and a friend were in the process of crossing the highway when the boy darted out into traffic and was hit by the rear portion of the truck. Authorities aren't sure if the driver knew that he or she struck the boy, but want to speak with that driver about what happened.
Descriptions of the truck are not very detailed. It is described as a white semi with pictures on the side. Detectives aren't sure if the truck continued in the direction of Wabasha or if it turned to go southbound towards Alma.
Anyone who knows anything about the truck or driver involved in the accident is asked to call the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office at 608-685-4433.
