MINNEAPOLIS - Seven college students are safe and accounted for after fire tore through their home in Dinkytown overnight Thursday.

Minneapolis fire crews were dispatched to the house on the 800 block of Southeast 13th Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Fire Department spokesperson Dave Dewall says when trucks arrived the front porch of the structure was fully involved, and the flames quickly jumped to the second floor. He tells KARE 11 that firefighters went inside the burning structure and conducted a search for residents, before they were forced to evacuate.

Crews were able to put down the fire but not before significant damage was done. The fire also jumped to a home next door due too the close proximity of the structures. Four students are temporarily displaced from that house as well.

Dewall says there were working smoke detectors in the home that burned. He says the situation was difficult for firefighters due to the tight quarters they were working in and the uncertainty of how many college students live in the residence.

At this point there is no indication of a cause.
