ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A Minnesota Marine has been honored for his heroism in the heat of battle.

Master Sgt. Donovan (Donny) Petty was decorated with the Silver Star Medal this week. The St. Cloud man was serving as a team chief with Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan in 2012 when his unit was ordered to capture a local insurgent leader. While carrying out the operation Petty and his team came under attack inside an open courtyard.

Armed insurgents fired at Petty as he maneuvered through the courtyard. During the exchange, insurgents lobed hand grenades at Petty's position, forcing him to withdraw from the courtyard. He then moved to the rooftop of a nearby building so he could lob grenades down at the enemy. His superiors say that Petty's initiative and swift action was largely responsible for the capture of the insurgent leader.

After accepting his award, Petty said his team deserves the credit for their actions that day.

"This award isn't about me; it's about my team and their collective actions on that day. They should be receiving an award, not me," said Petty.

Petty's father Dwight says Donny has done seven overseas tours, and is understandably proud of his son.
