ALBERTVILLE, Minn. -- On Tuesday night, an Albertville neighborhood was abuzz, when a black bear was seen roaming the streets.

"[My neighbor] came running across the empty field and said, "You better put your dog in the house, there is a bear running loose,"" said resident Mary Brandt.

First spotted in the 10-thousand block of 64th Street Northeast, the bear was scampering within feet of kids at a playground, and was in and out of a wooded area before it headed toward a home where a little girl was playing on her swing set.

That girl's father saw the bear heading towards his daughter, retrieved his rifle and fired. The bear died from the shot.

The shooter called the Wright County Sheriff's Department to let them know he had shot the bear because he thought his daughter was in danger. Authorities agreed with him and he was not cited. The DNR gave him a permit to keep the bear because the man said he could process it on his own for eating.
