MINNEAPOLIS - A Metro Transit bus driver lost control and rode up on the sidewalk on the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis Friday morning.
According to a Metro Transit spokesperson, the No. 10 bus was traveling southbound on Nicollet Mall at around 10 a.m. Friday when the driver lost control due to a medical issue.
The bus hit a trash can, a light pole, and the awning over the studio window of WCCO.
The driver of the bus was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where he later died.
"Metro Transit extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the operator's family and friends," the company said in a statement. "Metro Transit operators are in many ways an extended family and this loss will be felt throughout the organization."
The operator began his career at Metro Transit in 2013. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.
There were about a half-dozen passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident, Metro Transit officials said.
One passenger reported an ankle injury and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.
Crews worked to clean up the damage started at about 12 p.m. when the bus was taken from the scene.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is being conducted by Metro Transit Police.
