MINNEAPOLIS - There's a wave of change moving through north Minneapolis aimed at improving the future for kids.

On Saturday, more than 50 parents and their children graduated from the Northside Achievement Zone Family Academy, the largest class ever.

The goal is to break the cycle of ongoing crime on the north side by replacing it with a path to college.

"The things that happen in the first five years can change a child's life," said NAZ President Sondra Hollinger. "And not that they can't be resilient because we know we are, but we want to make sure they have a solid foundation and that they're ready for kindergarten and on their way to college."

The University of Minnesota's Center for Early Education and Development helped design the curriculum for the Family Academy.

Eight and 12-week programs are available. For more information, go to northsideachievement.org.
