ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. - The Metropolitan Council's Southwest Light Rail Transit project got a pair of thumbs up on Monday.

St. Louis Park's city council voted unanimously for the $1.7 billion proposal. Eden Prairie's city council voted 4-1 in favor of the project.

The 15-mile trek would connect downtown Minneapolis at Target Field to the southwest Metro in Eden Prairie. The SWLRT would run through St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Hopkins and Eden Prairie.

Each city needed to weigh in on the plan, which received the most push back from Minneapolis. But last week, the Met Council and the city reached a compromise amending parts of the project along Kenilworth Corridor.

Minneapolis is expected to vote on the project sometime in August.

Minnetonka and Hopkins have previously approved the plan.
