Political leaders and celebrities mingled at President Obama's inauguration for his second term. There were 1.1. million inauguration-related tweets during the ceremony.
Two pressure cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line killed three people and injured hundreds. In response, there were more than 27 million tweets about the bombings. People on Twitter showed solidarity for victims with the hashtag #bostonstrong.

Within four hours of her death, there were a million Twitter mentions of Britain's first female prime minister.
After the former South African president's death, Twitter spiked at 95,000 tweets per minute. Madiba, Mandela's clan name, also became a trending topic on Twitter with public figures, including former president Bill Clinton, tweeting affectionately about the leader.
Miles Scott, 5, played hero for the day and thousands of San Franciscans responded to social media blasts to line the streets and witness all the action. The city was transformed into Gotham, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to fulfill a dream of Scott's, who is in remission from leukemia.

Two weeks after Glee star Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose at the age of 31, co-star and girlfriend Lea Michele tweeted a picture of the couple, saying, "Cory will forever be in my heart." The tweet was retweeted more than 394,000 times.
