MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota's defense ranked first in the NFL in stopping the run from 2006 through 2008.
The current Vikings have a long way to go to get back to that level.
Preseason games can be difficult to analyze and often misleading, but no team ever feels good about allowing 260 yards rushing in one night. That's what the Vikings did in San Francisco while losing to the 49ers. Linebacker Chad Greenway says that performance last Friday "is not indicative of how we're going to be Sept. 9" in the season opener.
The mistakes, he says, are correctible.
The middle of Minnesota's defense will be under the most scrutiny this year, with new starters at nose tackle, middle linebacker and safety.
