EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The focus for the NFL championship game has shifted to New Jersey, as Denver and Seattle kicked off the first Super Bowl in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city.
While workers on Sunday night began dismantling Super Bowl Boulevard, the 13-block fan experience right through the heart of Manhattan, the title game got under way just miles away in New Jersey at MetLife Stadium with a temperature at kickoff of 49 degrees.
Officials say there were only minor disruptions for fans commuting to the game by train. NJ Transit says more than 27,000 passengers rode from Secaucus to MetLife Stadium, breaking the record of 22,000 in 2009 for a U2 concert.
Heavy security was evident, with sharpshooters on top of buildings and boats patrolling the rivers around the stadium. Fans passed through checkpoints manned by the TSA at the train station and had to go through metal detectors and regular security at the stadium.
