MINNEAPOLIS - Things are going in the right direction for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team.

Under coach Jerry Kill, the Gophers have gone from 3 wins to 6 wins to 8 wins so far this season.

On Friday, the team will face Syracuse in the Texas Bowl in Houston, and if they win they will accomplish something that only one other Gophers team has done since 1905.

The Gophers would finish the season with nine wins. It would be the eighth time in the school history that a team has finished with 9 or more wins.

"We gotta go finish the job," said Kill. "We really do."

In 2003, Glen Mason led the Gophers to a 10-3 record. Each of the other season occurred under Dr. Henry L. Williams from 1900-1905.

This year's feat would be even more impressive considering that Kill has missed time this season while he worked to manage his epilepsy.

But on Friday -- it's about the players and specifically seniors that managed only 12 wins in their first three seasons.

"We play a great opponent, and our seniors have the opportunity to do something that hasn't been done … That's a great achievement," Kill concluded.
