ST. PAUL, Minn. - Since Hockey Day Minnesota has played a role in helping the game take off in popularity, it's only appropriate that this year's edition be held at an airport.
Organizers announced Friday that a competition-sized refrigerated rink will be constructed on the tarmac at St. Paul's Holman field, so the city's spectacular skyscape will serve as the backdrop for Hockey Day Minnesota 2015, which is scheduled for January 17.
"This is the perfect way to commemorate prep hockey's second century in Saint Paul," said Minnesota Wild VP of Brand Content and Communications John Maher. "It will be a day full of celbration, from puck drop of the first high school game until the final horn sounds that night at the Wild game."
A slate of prep games will be played on the outdoor rink, and events surrounding Hockey Day Minnesota will honor family members and soldiers of the National Guard's 34th Combat Aviation Brigade and the 2-147th Assault Helicopter Battalion, which is based at Holman Field.
Here is the announced slate of games that will take place at Holman Field:
- St. Paul Johnson H.S. boys vs. Luverne
- St. Thomas Academy boys vs. Hill Murray
- Cretin Derham Hall girls vs. Duluth Northern Stars
