SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Everett Golson has reclaimed the job as Notre Dame's starting quarterback after being suspended last semester for academic impropriety.

Coach Brian Kelly on Wednesday said Golson would start against Rice on Aug. 30 and said he hopes he will be the starter for the entire season.

Kelly cited Golson's overall understanding of the offense, how he's handled himself with the team and his leadership as reasons he beat out sophomore Malik Zaire.

Golson hasn't played for the Irish since a 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game two seasons ago.

Golson says he feels a heightened responsibility, saying it's his job to make sure the offense is running correctly.

Kelly said Zaire reacted the way he wanted, saying he was unhappy but then went out and practiced well.
