EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition never really got started.

Coach Mike Zimmer confirmed the inevitable Monday morning, informing players that Matt Cassel will be the starter over rookie Teddy Bridgewater when the season begins Sept. 7 at St. Louis, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Vikings hadn't announced anything publicly. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer first reported the news, which had been roundly expected by players since spring practices.

Matt Cassel looks like right choice at QB for Vikings ... for now

Cassel, 32, kept the door shut in the preseason, completing 26 of 39 passes for 367 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a 103.3 rating.

Bridgewater, the No. 32 overall pick from Louisville, had bright moments of his own. But Zimmer has made clear the Vikings intended to wait for the right time organizationally to play their QB of the future.

For now, it's the veteran Cassel, who was 3-3 as a starter after replacing Christian Ponder (and later Josh Freeman) for parts of last season. Cassel voided his contract in March, then re-signed the next day for two years and $10.5 million with $5.65 million guaranteed.

In other Vikings news, the team announced a number of roster cuts. Released from the roster Monday were S Brandon Bishop, Tackles Pierce Burton and Kevin Murphy, cornerbacks Derek Cox and Robert Steeples, WRs Andy Cruse, Kamar Jorden, Ty Walker and Erik Lora, defensive linemen Kheeston Randall, Tyler Scott and Jake Snyder, ,

Placed on the waived/injured list was veteran safety Mistral Raymond.

The club activated tight end Chase Ford from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
