EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Vikings QB merrry-go-round apparently did not suit Matt Cassel's tastes.
Sources tell ESPN that Cassel, who wound up the 2013-2014 season as the Vikings starter, is going to opt out of his 2014-15 contract with the team, He was given that option when he signed with the Vikings as a veteran backup for Christian Ponder. When Ponder faltered, Cassel led the team to more victories than anyone else who took snaps for the purple in 2013-14.
Cassel's decision does not, however, prevent him from returning to the Vikings under terms of a new deal, but he will have the option of signing with another team. There are opportunities around the league, with many teams looking for a veteran quarterback, and Cassel stands to sign a deal for more than the reported $3.7 million he would have collected from the Vikings.
