EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Spencer Nealy has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.

Nealy was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Detroit Lions, last season. He was cut and picked up the by the Vikings and played in two preseason games. He ended the season, six of the last seven weeeks, on the Vikings' practice squad.

Nealy will be eligible to return to the Vikings' active roster on Sept. 29 following the team's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Nealy is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

USA Today's Tom Pelissero reported via Twitter that Nealy took a supplement that contained a banned stimulant.
