Lindsey Vonn is out. So who will be NBC's face of the Sochi Games?
"There's plenty of stars out there," NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus said Tuesday. "We wish we still had Lindsey there, but we don't. That's the nature of sports. … The one thing about the Olympics, this isn't about the story; it's about team, it's about country, it's about pride, and we think we're well positioned to tell those stories."
Some potential American stars:
Shaun White: He's the two-time defending Olympic champion in men's halfpipe, and he's going for a medal in slopestyle, a new event that requires riders to navigate a series of rails, boxes and jumps down the mountain. Early in the season the 27-year-old trained on a custom halfpipe built for him in Australia by one of his sponsors, GoPro.
Mikaela Shiffrin: A world champion in slalom at age 18, she is the youngest American to win a World Cup title in any discipline.
Ted Ligety: He was the first man in 45 years to win three events at one world championship last year when he prevailed in giant slalom, superG and super combined. He is the world's best in the giant slalom, with four World Cup titles since 2008.
Lolo Jones: She's coming off a silver medal with pilot Elana Meyers at the World Cup women's bobsled race in Winterberg, Germany, on Sunday. The Olympic hurdler, who took up the sport in 2012, is in the mix for a spot as a brakeman. The Olympic team will be announced Jan. 19.
Shani Davis The 31-year-old speedskater has a chance to win his third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the 1,000 meters.
Hockey: Men's hockey boasts familiar NHL stars such as Patrick Kane, Ryan Suter and Phil Kessel. Women's hockey could introduce some new stars, such as Kessel's sister, Amanda.
Figure skating: At this weekend's national championships in Boston, the team for Sochi will be decided. Two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner just missed a spot on the American team for the 2010 Olympics. She will be competing with Gracie Gold, an 18-year-old who won a silver medal at the 2013 U.S. championships, her first time competing at the senior level.
