How to make roses last

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn -- Roses and most floral arrangements don't come cheap, so it is critical to follow some easy steps to keep those buds blooming as long as possible.

Susie Bachman from Bachman's stopped by KARE New@4 with some suggestions beginning with boxed roses.

Fill a vase with lukewarm water and add one half package of the enclosed floral preservative.

Remove the water tubes and any foliage that will fall below the vase water line. Removing the foliage will help prevent bacterial growth in the water.

Immerse the stems in several inches of lukewarm water. While stems are under water, cut off one inch using a sharp knife or scissors.

It is best to cut the stem at an angle to maximize the amount of water that can be absorbed by the stem.

Immediately transfer trimmed roses to the vase.

Showcasing your flowers

Display your flowers in a cool place away from direct sunlight and drafts.

You can prolong the appearance of your roses by removing any discolored or drooping outer petals.

Keep your flowers away from ripening fruit, which gives off ethylene gas shortening the life of your roses.

Many rose varieties now open quickly and stay open. Don't be alarmed that the life of your roses is decreasing if the flowers open immediately.
