Snow in western Pennsylvania Saturday

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - We may have our most significant weather event of February 2012 this afternoon.  But snow lovers shouldn't get too excited just yet.

Light snow showers will be around later this afternoon during the evening hours on and off. It won't amount to more than a dusting, perhaps a tenth of an inch or so here in the metro, but it's the most we've seen this month so far. Southern Minnesota, near Rochester could see as much as an inch or so.

More interesting than the dull snow event of today is the stark contrast from last winter. At this point last year we had 64 days with snowfall already compared to just 34 this year, and we had 61.1 inches of snow to date at this point and just 14.9 inches this year!

A normal winter would have piled around 36.7 inches on the ground by this date. After today's insignificant snowfall the sun will come back Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 30s, then near 40 through most of the week.

February temperatures with almost half the month gone already rank near the top 10. If February ends up in the top 10 warmest, it will make the fifth consecutive month of temperatures in the top 10 warmest!
