Spring outlook looks cooler than normal

MINNEAPOLIS - The birds seem to know that the season has changed because they have been chirping all day Thursday in the KARE11 backyard.

At 11:57 the sun was directly over the equator, making it the spring equinox. The term equinox means "equal night" in Latin.

Thursday was the day when suns rays shine directly onto the earth, so every part of our planet gets an equal amount of light. From here, the earth tilts toward the sun, giving us more light and more heat leading into summer.

The Climate Prediction Center released the spring outlook and unfortunately it looks as though cool temperatures persist at least through April. Precipitation-wise, we can expect average amounts of rainfall, and even a bit more snow.
