Tips for staying safe during storms

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- What should you do to stay safe if you are caught in a storm?

KARE meteorologist Laura Betker offers some tips:

  • Heading inside a house or enclosed shelter is best, but stay away from windows to avoid the possibility of flying debris.
  • Also avoid taking a shower or using any corded electrical devices or appliances.
  • Your car is also a safe shelter, but it's not because of the rubber tires. The metal on the top and sides of your car directs the electricity from a lightning strike around you and down into the ground.
  • Be sure to get out of the swimming pool! The current from a lightning strike nearby can travel through the underground plumbing and electrify the water.

And always remember the phrase: "When thunder roars, head indoors."
