I-35W to close Friday for bridge demolition

MNDOT will close heavily used I-35W in both directions between I-94 and Highway 62 on Friday at 10 p.m. so crews can demolish the 38th Street Bridge.

MINNEAPOLIS - Motorists will be putting on a few more miles this weekend, taking alternative routes to avoid major work on I-35W in Minneapolis.

MNDOT will close the heavily used interstate in both directions between I-94 and Highway 62 on Friday at 10 p.m. so crews can demolish the 38th Street Bridge. Crews will begin closing ramps to the impacted stretch of I-35W at 9 p.m. Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street. The 38th Street bridge itself will be closed to drivers starting at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Motorists will be detoured around the work using I-394, Highway 100 and Highway 62.

The plan is for I-35W to reopen Monday, March 5 at 5 a.m., in time for the morning rush.

These closures are part of the four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W, which includes reconstructing pavement, bridges and ramps on I-35W, adding new access ramps to the Lake Street Business District, building a transit station on the interstate and constructing new MnPASS lanes.

Work is expected to be completed in fall 2021. To learn more about the project, visit the MnDOT project page.
