I-94 E reopened after crash, car fire

The crash caused a car to start on fire during Tuesday's rush hour commute.

MINNEAPOLIS - A car fire blocked several lanes of eastbound I-94 at Portland for about two hours Tuesday morning, bringing downtown traffic to a standstill.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation tweeted around 8:25 a.m. that all eastbound lanes were blocked by the car fire, after a crash. No injuries were reported. Traffic was being diverted to southbound Highway 65.

They warned motorists in the area to expect delays.

About 20 minutes later, MnDOT tweeted an update that two lanes of traffic were being allowed through the area at the Portland tunnel. However, delays were still to be expected.

Just before 10 a.m., the Minnesota State Patrol tweeted the crash and car fire had been cleared, allowing traffic to return to normal.

No word yet on what caused the initial crash.
