Hats off: “Crowns” tackles life, loss and love

Saint Paul show warms souls and hearts in rich coming-of-age powerful musical.

SAINT PAUL, Minn — Hats off to Saint Paul! The award winning Crowns, by Regina Taylor, is playing now through October 6, 2019 at Summit Center for Arts & Innovation.

Crowns is a rich coming-of-age musical. It's about the power of family, the strength of the sisterhood, the Black church and so much more!

Yolanda, a self-destructive African American teen, is sent to Brooklyn to live with Grandmother Shaw down south. After the violent death of her brother, Yolanda is ushered through pain, and baptized by the love, compassion and fortitude of the sisterhood of “Hat Queens.” Each Queen’s hat carries a memory, a history of life, death, religion, racism, identity, unity, pride, trials and triumphs. Their stories are told through ancient oral and spiritual traditions which originated in Africa and are embodied in field songs, blues, jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and the Gospel of the American Black Church.

Crowns stars Jevetta Steele, Jamecia Bennett, Thomasina Petrus, Aimee Bryant, Shirley Marie Graham, Zaria Graham and T. Mychael Rambo. New Dawn Theatre Company founder, Austene Van, is the show’s artistic director.

Tickets are on sale now! They cost $35. dollars each for adults, $20. dollars each for students and seniors. The public is invited. Use the password CROWNS19 for group discounts. For more information, click here.
