GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – KARE 11 has made the decision to try and no longer name the gunman in the Orlando mass shooting.
An email detailing the decision was sent to newsroom staff on Monday. Along with not using the killer’s name, photos of him will not be used in future on-air and online content when possible.
The email noted there may be exceptions to the rule and those will be determined after careful consideration by newsroom managers.
In a post on her Facebook page, KARE 11’s Rena Sarigianopoulos shared her wish to no longer name those responsible for such tragedies.
The email to KARE 11 Newsroom staff also mentioned FBI Director James Comey’s decision to not name the gunman during a press conference on Monday.
"Part of what motivates sick people is the twisted notion of fame or glory. And I don't want to be part of that, for the sake of the victims and their families," he said.
