Families go to camp ahead of new school year

Camp Lake Hubert in Nisswa hosts an annual Family Camp every summer.

NISSWA, Minn. - Summer break is just about over and that means many families are getting in their last-minute vacations before school starts, whether it's hopping on an airplane or taking a road trip.

Every year-- people from around the country travel to Minnesota to go to camp. It's not just a kids camp, it's for adults too.

"It's watching the grandchildren blossom. They just blossom here. They love the counselors, they love all the singing. They love not having an adult not standing above them all the time that's a big one," said Maria Schweizer. She has been to Camp Lake Hubert's Family Camp several times. Schweizer is from Washington State.

A lot of families who attend the camp are not from Minnesota. Most are from the U.S., but others came this year from Japan and the United Kingdom.

Laura Gurasich and her family are from Texas. She calls the week "refreshing."

"We haven't watched any TV or we haven't been on a screen at all this week and its been really fun to have our family have this experience," she said.

The camp is all-inclusive, meaning lodging, meals and activities are included in the experience, which lasts just under a week. There are about 15 activities for families, from crafts to horseback riding to a zipline.

Camp Lake Hubert has been around since the 1920's. It started as one of the first all-girls camps in the U.S. One week each year, it's transformed into Family Camp, a tradition that's been around since the 1970's.

"It's a chance for them to have those simple pleasure that only camp can provide," said John Heineman, Director of Family Camp.

"I think trying new things and getting us out of our comfort zone is better," said Gurasich.

"You feel like a kid again. This is a great place for kids and adults," said Schweizer.
