That's So Minnesota: New Ulm's Hermann Monument

From the start of this segment, Ellery McCardle has gotten numerous suggestions to check out Hermann the German.

NEW ULM, Minn. -- When I first started this segment, one of the first suggestions I got was to go to New Ulm and go on top of the Hermann Monument.

I put the trip off for a few months because I've been waiting for the trees to green up. So this week, I headed south.

This chieftain represents German victories against the Romans in 9 AD.

The monument attracts about 12,000 people every year with many visitors coming from Germany and Europe.

To go up the monument, head to Hermann Heights Park. Once you get there, pay the entrance fee and start climbing the 99 steps to the top.

Once up top, you'll be standing some 102 feet up and what a spectacular view you'll see!

The lush trees are breathtaking. I'd like to go back in the Fall, I bet that's a gem of a view.

Looking overhead, you can see New Ulm and what caught my eye was the red brick glowing off the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in the distance.

The monument is well over a century old and it's showing its age.

There are moisture issues and cracking, so a group is coming this month to study the structure and figure out what's going happening, if it needs to be fixed.

The monument is open through Labor Day and on weekends through the Fall, so you have plenty of time to visit.

A shoutout to those who suggested this spot, including Tami Bakeberg who messaged me on my Faceboook page.

Where should I go next? I need your help deciding which awesome view to check out in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.
