That's So Minnesota: Whitewater State Park

Ellery McCardle checks out a place she used to live near, but never visited, until now, thanks to a viewer.

ALTURA, Minn. -- I started my career as a journalist in Rochester and during my nearly five years in Southeastern Minnesota, never once did I go to Whitewater State Park, which is about a half-hour from the Med City.

Shame on me, I know, but thanks to a viewer, Andrea, for sending me an email telling me to head to the park and specifically Chimney Rock.

To get there, take the Chimney Rock Trail up a stone-led staircase and then you'll veer to the left along a path of roots and stumps jutting from the ground. You'll get a great view from atop the bluffs, some 200 feet up.

Next, I walked along the winding path to the breathtaking view of Inspiration Point.

There, watch your step as the limestone cliff narrows and you look out at the valley within the bluffs. It's a great place to take photos and watch for birds, I saw so many!

Whitewater State Park is a place I want to go back to in the fall when the colors change once again. You cannot deny the beauty of the bluff region.

The entire trail took me about 90 minutes to complete, but I was hauling, so I suggest you take it slow and enjoy the beauty of this park nestled in southeastern Minnesota.
