Aspiring journalist interviews rising gymnastics star at annual journalism camp

Student journalists focus on health and physical activity topics at ThreeSixty Journalism's annual camp

ST PAUL, Minn. — Aspiring young journalists are honing their storytelling skills with the help of Twin Cities news professionals. It's all part of ThreeSixty Journalism's TV broadcast camp at the University of St. Thomas each summer.

The annual camp is sponsored by The Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. The camp encourages students to explore health equity issues in the state of Minnesota, with a focus on creative physical activity in diverse communities.

This year, KARE 11 photojournalist Carly Danek and reporter Jeremiah Jacobsen teamed up with high school junior Sophia Schach of Minneapolis. Sophia had the opportunity to interview gymnast and aspiring 2020 Olympian Sunisa Lee of St. Paul about her rise in the gymnastics world.

"It's super cool knowing I can inspire people just by doing gymnastics," Lee told Schach in their interview, adding that the Olympic dream is what keeps her motivated. "Thinking about the Olympics (is) the biggest goal. I try not to think about it, but it's always in the back of your head because you want it so bad."
