Wis. students make bowls to feed the hungry

Students at a western Wisconsin high school are getting their hands dirty to help feed the hungry not only in their own community but for those less fortunate across the globe.

OSCEOLA, Wis.- Students at a western Wisconsin high school are getting their hands dirty to help feed the hungry not only in their own community but for those less fortunate across the globe.

KARE 11's Alicia Lewis went back to her Alma Mater, Osceola High School, for this week's Kids Who KARE.

When strolling the halls of my old High School, Alicia swears she can still hear the voice of her former art teacher, Peggy Medcraft, but to her students she is known as "Crafty".

"I literally have the best job in the whole world... I do," said Crafty. "This is the hour of the day the students love the most!"

"School, stressed, whatever, you come in here and it's just like Ahhh there's music, you get to be creative, you get to be with crafty, and it's super awesome," said student Sarah Vater.

Crafty has been teaching her students pottery in Osceola for the past 20 years, but the lesson behind throwing your first clay pot goes much further.

"You're not only making something awesome, you are also constructing things that are going to bring in money and help affect people's lives across the world and here in Osceola," said Vater.

For 15 years, Crafty's students have been making bowls, not looking for that "A" but hoping to use these bowls to help feed the hungry.

"It takes a motivated group of juniors and seniors to really make it happen." said Crafty.

Empty Bowls is an evening where hundreds of the students handcrafted pieces of art are on display and ready to be sold, with the proceeds to be donated to both the local food shelf and Heifer International, a charity organization working to end hunger and poverty around the world.

Last year, district wide, Empty Bowls raised $12,500, and this year, Crafty is hoping it will be their biggest year yet.

"They feel a sense of giving back and being able to make a difference as a high school kid just by donating the pieces in front of them and there are so many people that have much less than we do in the United States and even here in Osceola Wisconsin," said Crafty.

Empty Bowls is Wednesday night at Osceola High School starting at 5PM. Everyone is welcome to attend!
