GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Gemstone colors are helping dementia patients with memory and helping caregivers know what type of care to provide to patients.

Nursing homes across the country are using the Teepa Snow Gems model to help better care for and understand residents. As part of the system each resident is classified as a gem.

For example Martha Weddle is classified as 'emerald'. There are emeralds on her memory box, on the bulletin board and elsewhere to remind her caregivers that she is "on the go."

Dementia is a progression and experts urge families to focus on what their loved ones can do instead of what they can't.
