GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Multigenerational homes are on the rise! It’s estimated that 57 million Americans are sharing a roof with their parents, grandparents, and even their grandkids too. This morning, local real estate professional Mark Abdel with RE/MAX Advantage Plus discussed what buyers should consider when they’re looking for a space for everybody, including seniors.

Whether by circumstance, culture, or choice, many families are choosing to live together. If an elderly parent or parents are included in the mix, Abdel suggests looking for homes that provide single level living. He says most of his buyers aged 55 and older are often looking for one level, one story living with no or very few steps. Abdel says seniors want the convenience of having their bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and living rooms all on one floor.

Even though everyone’s living under one roof, Abdel says most of his multigenerational buyers still want their privacy. Because of that, he says multigen buyers should look for homes that can provide separate spaces – in essence, an apartment inside the home. He says this can be ideal for older parents who want to be with their families but still want their own private bedroom suites with separate bathrooms, and sometimes, even separate kitchens or kitchenettes.

Lastly, Abdel reminds his buyers to consider open floor plans and wider door frames, so that as older parents age, the home will be able to accommodate walkers or wheelchairs, if necessary. Abdel says he advises families to figure out “how” they want to live first, before starting their multigenerational home search. Narrowing down the ‘must haves’, Abdel says, will help buyers figure out if they’ll be able to find a house that’ll fit their needs, or whether they’ll have to remodel an existing home or build a house to suit.
